Frustrated with your current chaotic lifestyle? Do you find yourself unable to breathe due to your overfilled schedule and chores? Does your soul yearn for a lifestyle that allows you more time with family, friends, and doing the things that make you genuinely happy? You have searched for answers, but nothing seems to fit your family. You need the Phase Down Lifestyle! The Phase Down Lifestyle is about living a more simplified lifestyle that is tailored for your family.

You can find an abundance of information published about simple living. So much so, that many of the concepts have become buzz words. Do a Google search and you will find simple living, frugal, minimalism, simplicity, green living, lagom, and sustainable living as just a few of the options. Bookstores are loaded with titles that give you clear and concise methods to a more simple life. Each one detailing a process, philosophy, and a promise that you will be more happy once you implement the method.

The truth is, all of these approaches can be successful. Follow the thoughts and rules and your results will be as professed. The problem therein is that much of the time the other people in your family are not educated or desire the same goals for a happy life. Furthermore, you may find that you do not completely agree with a philosophy or are ready to do what is required. Ot maybe you are just a rebel. (Me too!) So, what’s a mom to do?

If you are me, you develop your own system that can be tailored to any family. A system that allows for the changes that occur within a family unit over time. Now we are talking! I agree with many points and concepts from so many of the approaches, but can’t commit fully. My family, ummmm yeah, try telling teenagers they need to dispense of everything that is not a necessity in life or that the only sneakers they can have are on the clearance rack at Walmart. Not happening.

Then I realized, it was not a method that was needed, it was a lifestyle. A lifestyle that emphasized the most important things, respecting the differences of that idea from person to person. A lifestyle that would not send me searching for yet another approach when my family structure, schedule, and commitments changed. I wanted a lifestyle that was flexible and all of my family members could live by and most of all, Be Happy!

What is the Phase Down Lifestyle?

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be writing articles to help you, and your family, transition to the Phase Down Lifestyle. It is a progressive lifestyle, which means it changes as needed. It allows each family member to transition at their own pace. Donation and/or selling of all of your possessions is not required. Owning only 2 days worth of clothing, also not part of the Phase Down Lifestyle. Shopping at the Bargain Bin for all your household needs is not part of this lifestyle either.

If you have a weakness for J Brand jeans, you will not have to give them up or feel guilty for owning or purchasing a pair. It’s time to choose a lifestyle that fits, that is flexible, and offers you the life and happiness you deserve! The Phase Down Lifestyle is one you design specifically for you and your family. So, let’s get down to the foundation of it all and find out what the Phase Down Lifestyle is.

Lifestyle vs. Method

First, we need to look at the difference between a lifestyle and a method/approach. A lifestyle is defined as the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level, etc.,that together constitute the mode of living of an individual or group. Notice that the key components refer to particular traits that are unique to the individual or group. What does this all this mean for you? If you want a more simple life filled with contentment and happiness, you need to know your habits, habits that you are prepared to change to achieve your goal, your personality, and ideals. Simply put, a lifestyle is a long term way of living that suits your uniqueness.

A method is a manner or mode of procedure, especially an orderly, logical, or systematic way of instruction or presentation. The key component of a method is that it is procedural based. A method can be repeated over a long period of time, but generally a method is short lived. Once the goal of the method is achieved or abandoned the method is discontinued. Of most importance here is that any procedural based effort means that someone else determined the course of actions. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think someone else’s ideas for the masses about how to gain happiness apply to my unique family.

Achieving Success

We will be uncovering different aspects of your personality and what you are looking to achieve. You will set goals for yourself. If you are bringing the family along on this journey, I encourage you to have a little meeting.

The next step will be focused on the things that matter most and organizing them in such a way that values all of your family. Because if the family is miserable it truly isn’t worth it. In addition, you will have the opportunity to model a life skill for your children that they will bring into adulthood.

The result will be a life that phases down a large portion of the things that bring you down or, more importantly, cause you not to be able to spend time doing what you love. You will learn how to phase down commitments of family members, how to organize your home, and how to make yourself a priority. Cuz if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!

There is so much more to this lifestyle than meets the eye! It is rewarding and filled with happiness and fond memories.

What the Phase Down Lifestyle is Not

Now that you have an idea of what the Phase Down Lifestyle is, let’s talk about what it isn’t. Firstly, the inspiration behind the Phase Down Lifestyle was the need for a way of living that encompassed the different personalities and interests of an entire family unit. What resonated within me, didn’t with my children. What worked for my husband, didn’t for me. Another frustrating result was that a method would work for a period of time, but as schedules, jobs, and interests changed and kids grew, the method was not flexible enough.

What You Won’t Find

My efforts in green living sent me on a path that often found my family looking at me as though I had grown a third head! After much research and implementation of different methodologies, I continued to find that they weren’t suited for my family. My family as a whole unit, altering schedules, and changing interests were not considered. The methods weren’t flexible to make the long haul. Here is what you will not find in Phase Down Lifestyle.

  • Ideas and concepts that must be strictly followed to be successful
  • The discarding of all your possessions to a bare minimum
  • A requirement to believe any defined set standards
  • Efforts to sway you away from your faith and convictions
  • A specified measuring tool that determines your success
  • A definitive form for presentation of your home
  • Restriction or disapproval of your choices regarding personal possessions
  • Judgement about your decisions or choices
